CFS is looking for an experienced Compliance leader and entrepreneur to design, build, and lead our Compliance function. As our Head of Compliance, you will guide our strategy and determine the most effective ways to ensure CFS' legal and regulatory compliance with a focus towards always innovating, using streamlined tools, and finding creative ways to build a compliance capability that furthers our mission to deploy fusion power plants into the world.

Our ideal candidate has a demonstrated track record for building high-functioning compliance functions at similarly fast moving and technical organizations. They should have experience implementing internal controls and promoting an organization-wide culture of compliance to prevent and detect compliance issues, ensure compliance with regulatory and legal requirements, train employees on how to identify and reduce risks, and provide a robust network for reporting of issues.

The position will report directly to the Chief Operating Officer and work closely with key functions including Global Supply Chain and Movement Building (specifically Government Affairs).

The Head of Compliance will use attention to detail, a team player mindset, strong writing and problem solving skills to grow and support CFS’ compliance program by:

  • Identifying potential risk areas, deficiencies in current compliance related practices and assisting with developing appropriate program modifications and related activities
  • Ensuring continuous compliance to business partnership, regulatory, and legal requirements by developing/improving and administering the necessary processes:
  • Business partnership and contract compliance
  • Government contracts
  • Export control and sanctions. Immigration and contractor program as it relates to export control.
  • GDPR and other government requirements for personal data protection (CCPA, HIPAA, etc.)
  • US Debarment (OFAC now GCL)
  • Grants and joint R&D programs with academia and government entities
  • Supporting CFS operational SMEs (HR, Finance, IT, EHS) under the overall company compliance framework:
  • Support issues identification and resolution as required
  • Ensure internal policies and documentation are in place, known, followed appropriately and integrated into the overall compliance program
  • Act as point person to external auditors of CFS’ operational functions. Create and maintain a central repository of external materials with consistent branding and messaging to be shared with external parties.
  • The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • A demonstrated track record for building high-functioning compliance functions at similarly fast moving and technical organizations using the DOJ’s Seven Elements of an Effective Compliance Program
  • Experience in exercising independent judgment assessing, planning, conducting workplace evaluations and making recommendations for new programs, processes
  • Experience presenting complex issues in a clear and concise manner, both in writing and verbally for presentation or review by senior leadership
  • Experience conveying facts, analyses, conclusions, and recommendations in a logical, concise written work product
  • Demonstrated ability to independently identify problems and suggest creative solutions
  • Experience concurrently managing numerous complex projects, transactions, opportunities and relationships with competing deadlines
  • Bachelor's degree with 10+ years relevant experience or Masters or Law degree preferred with 5+ years experience. Most recent relevant experience preferably Director or VP level.
  • Additional preferred experience and/or qualifications:

  • Able to build a solid, effective compliance program leveraging good internal and external working relationships
  • Able to apply appropriate policies and practices in the completion of ethics and compliance assignments. Skilled in critical decision-making.
  • Possesses strong organizational and time management skills, driving tasks to completion
  • Able to constructively work under stress and pressure when faced with high workloads and deadlines
  • Able to work independently with minimum supervision
  • Able to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Ability to type, stand, and sit for extended periods of time
