About the company:

Loam works with 4.5 billion years of evolution to solve the climate crisis. Microbes have changed the composition of our atmosphere through earth’s history. At Loam, we are ensuring these organisms can do it again. Through a better understanding of how microbes influence the carbon cycle, we can create new planetary-scale opportunities for carbon sequestration and improve agricultural productivity.

At Loam, we have the earth in our hands. As a team of scientists, farmers and entrepreneurs, we are on a mission to improve the world’s farmland and address climate change.

We are developing microbial technology to remove CO2 from the atmosphere and build carbon in agricultural soils. With a dedicated agenda to deliver nature based solutions, we help farming businesses prosper by boosting yield and soil health and enabling access to carbon markets.

As a start-up with ambitious founders and investors, our work is fast-paced and multidimensional. We foster a supportive and diverse workplace, where every team member is encouraged to learn and grow beyond their area of expertise.

While everyone at Loam is working in different roles, we all have one job: to remove CO2 from the atmosphere and store it stably in the soil.

About the role

We are looking for a Geospatial Statistician to contribute to the development of robust carbon modelling approaches as the broader team works together across:

  • Stratification approaches, for physical soil sampling purposes
  • Assess soil sequestration potential and prioritize areas for business development
  • Optimize carbon credit claims, by ensuring robustness and traceability of the “carbon journey”
  • Decrease the cost of SOC quantification by the innovative combination of different approaches

Responsibilities

  • Become an expert in mapping and stratification methods
  • Work closely with Carbon Markets team members, in particular the Carbon Data Scientist (MRV) and Software Developer to develop our digital carbon platform capabilities.
  • Create, develop, and maintain custom databases that pull from spatial data sets such as census data, GPS, field notes, remote sensing, and environmental monitoring data.
  • Determine geographical statistics based on spatial data to inform decision-making.
  • Collaborate on data visualization dashboards to more effectively communicate with clients and stakeholders.
  • Work closely with our agronomy, product, data science and engineering team to build operational, state of the art soil carbon modelling systems

Requirements

  • Master's or doctoral degree in Agriculture/Environmental/Soil Science or geology/geo-technical with extensive geo-statistics experience in analyzing and interpolating large spatial 3D/4D datasets, preferably including soil and/or carbon
  • Advanced knowledge of GIS applications and software such as ArcGIS or QGIS
  • Experience with some or all of the following data analysis methods: generalized linear modelling, bootstrapping and simulation, spatial analysis, and Bayesian hierarchical modelling
  • Experience with some or all of the following interpolations methods: kriging, radial-basis-function, inverse-distance-weighting, and nearest-neighbor
  • Experience in reporting and visualization
  • Preferred experience in the design of sampling campaigns and monitoring networks (incl. the development of methodologies for the sampling design, stratification, soil sampling and lab analyses protocols)
  • Experience with proximal and remote measurement technologies, field, or laboratory expertise measuring soil carbon, land carbon building technologies and methods, and/or improvement of systems and processes
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills with the ability to work well under time constraints and meet deliverable targets and deadlines
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience with relational database systems and data manipulation,

*Please note that we are unable to support visa applications for this role, therefore we request that only those with current working rights in Canada apply.
