Flight controls lead 

We are looking for an outstanding Flight controls Lead with design experience from novel control system challenges and ideally also some aerospace development background, to join our innovative team and thus shape the future of urban e-mobility.  

In this position you will become part of our talented flight mechanics team with direct report to the Head of Flight Mechanics. Your role will lead design and implementation of the flight control algorithms for Lilium’s 7-seater EVTOL aircraft with its novel configuration (36 vectoring ducted fans).  

Your Day To Day 

  • Lead the concept design, development and testing strategy of full authority FBW control laws for the Lilium aircraft  
  • Collaborate with the Systems and Chief engineering team to define requirements related to the flight control system and system safety. 
  • Define the FCS and control law performance requirements, in co-ordination with other flight mechanics disciplines (e.g. Handling Qualities) 
  • Define the strategy for the validation and verification of control law requirements in both simulator and flight test 
  • Support the systems engineering tasks related to qualification of the Flight Control System including Failure Hazard Analysis, Validation and Verification Process, Cockpit Integration, Etc. 
  • Represent the company in meetings with airworthiness authorities, within the domain of flight controls. 
  • Manage risks and issues and develop mitigation plans at all levels (short term and long term up to certification) to meet company milestones 
  • Technical approval of documentation 
  • Provide technical expertise and coaching of less experienced team members 
  • Actively shaping the processes and frameworks of the flight control law team 

 

Your Profile: 

  • Proven experience in control law design and development for complex control challenges 
  • Ideally, also experience in flight control algorithm design for rotary-wing and/or fixed-wing  
  • Proven experienced in analyzing flight dynamic modes for stability and control 
  • Experience with actuator and motor control loops 
  • Experience with mixing and blending of control surface commands 
  • Experience with sensor processing  
  • Experience with requirement definition 
  • Familiarity with DO-178B/C, DO-160, DO-254, ARP 4754A, ARP 4761 
  • Expertise in MathWorks® tools for control algorithm development 
  • Familiarity with EASA CS / FAA part 23/25/27/29, EASA SC-VTOL or other certification experience 
  • Previous experience in the development of dissimilar flight control system software as means mitigating development errors 

Nice to have 

  • Familiarity with aircraft handling quality requirements 
  • Familiarity with DO-331 
  • Experience on aircraft with multiple different modes of flight, including vertical lift 
  • Experience building control laws for unmanned aircraft 
  • Experience in math model development of a physical system
