About the company:

Upward Farms grows leafy greens and fish with the highest ecological and quality standards so that everyone can nourish their body, family, and the planet.

With 95% of leafy greens grown on the West Coast and 90% of seafood imported, our mission is to heal the broken food system and reconnect eaters with flavorful and nutritious local food.

We are seeking an Engineering Manager to support our Software & Electronics team’s Data Science & Analytics program. This role will support our growing needs for data wrangling, infrastructure, visualization, and advanced modeling across a range of business, manufacturing, and environmental data. You will support planning and building our data environment across the organization working with Farm Operations, Engineering, Business, and Research & Development teams. You will guide the development of data visualization and storytelling for functional leads and the company at-large that communicate insights, findings, and recommendations. Simultaneously, you will similarly guide the practice of data science that will enable a variety of R&D efforts.

As the S&E team grows, you will bridge technical and managerial gaps to ensure our data infrastructure meets company needs and industry standards, innovating wherever appropriate. Day-to-day work will include budgeting, prioritization, resource leveling, roadmap & program management, internal customer management, vendor management, and problem solving.

Success

Success in this role requires developing the data sets, tools, and analysis necessary for data-driven decision making. This role must implement best practices that deliver and balance efficiency, speed, security, maintainability, and scalability in our data systems. Your objective is to define a strategy and vision for data science and analytics. You will lead a team of advanced data analysts in execution of this strategy and assume accountability for success.

We are looking for someone eager to develop strong bonds with diverse teams and operators. Candidates must thrive working on a blank page, highly interdisciplinary projects and excel at converting ambiguity into actionable plans. Candidates for this position will be expected to develop effective problem solvers around them and engender an engineering culture of innovation, good process, and execution. This role will be charged with delivering work with high visibility across our organization.

This role will ask the question “How can I help?” more than issue assignments. Ultimate success in this role requires investing in and supporting projects, programs, and colleagues so they reach and exceed their goals.
