Why does SPAN exist?

Founded by Tesla’s former head of energy, SPAN was founded because this is our Decade to Decarbonize. 

 

About 40% of greenhouse gas emissions are controlled by things we do in our households, decisions we make as individuals. Most of us feel powerless about confronting climate change, but the things in our basements, garages, and on our roofs directly influence the largest single slice of the problem (source). 

 

The answer is to electrify everything, which we do by:

 

  1. Assisting the electric grid: The North American electric grid is the ‘world’s largest machine’. It is old, it is expensive to maintain and it was designed to transport power in one direction. And as we electrify everything, it is not equipped to handle an increase in volume of transport.
  2. Upgrading our gas appliances and gasoline cars to electric. All the electricity in the world will still not power our gas dryers, furnaces, water heaters, stoves and cars. Electric versions of these appliances exist and they are safer, cheaper, cleaner, smaller and quieter.
  3. Making more electricity at home. This increases the amount of clean electricity in circulation and does it without stressing the electric grid.



What is SPAN doing?

We envision a future where our homes are

  • Self-reliant: They make their own energy and decide when to use that energy. They warn you of outages, prepare themselves, and adapt energy use to endure even the most severe outages.
  • All-electric: Our homes cannot be self-reliant until they are all-electric. SPAN removes constraints that exist with your existing power service, allowing households to upgrade their gasoline cars and gas appliances to their electric superiors.
  • Looking out for us: They tell you if something bad has happened, is happening or will happen to your most-expensive appliances
  • A model citizen of the grid: They assist the grid at times of need, with little inconvenience to you.

 

None of this is possible without a modern-day electric panel. So we started by completely reinventing this hundred year-old appliance.

Why you should consider this role

 

The Director, Product Management will own SPAN’s homeowner and installer experiences. This is a high-visibility, high-impact role with opportunities to grow your team, hone your craft and do your life’s best work.

 

Your team will own SPAN Home, our native, cross-platform app that is meant to: 

  • Motivate the purchase: By turning complex value propositions into an experience that simplifies, explains and inspires. SPAN needs to be experienced to be understood, and you will drive this agenda.
  • Assist the sale: By making the app a valuable selling and demand-generation tool for our partners (solar companies, homebuilders, electrical contractors, appliance manufacturers, power utilities and more). 
  • Be valuable to the household: By delivering features that manifest our vision of the SPAN Home (see section above: What is SPAN doing?)
  • Encourage high-impact behaviors: By making credible recommendations and providing dead-simple pathways for homeowners to go solar, add home batteries, drive electric and upgrade their gas appliances.

The Product Experience team will also own SPAN’s Installer experience. 

We think of the installer as our first customer, and often our biggest product champions. The journey is envisioned to,

  • Simplify installs: To solve for electrification at the scale and speed required, we’ll need to leverage the existing electrician labor force across the country. This means that out of the box, the SPAN Panel needs to be as simple and intuitive to install as traditional, familiar electrical panels.. This is primarily enabled by SPAN’s Installer app, which this team will own.
  • Scale installs: Your team will own processes and workflows to activate a high volume of installation companies, and distributed crews within each company. This involves making it simple for businesses to sign up, and for crews to receive effective on-the-job training and troubleshooting via SPAN’s apps.
  • Scale offerings: SPAN has a fast growing product line and feature set, and integrates with a fast growing number of hardware components (solar inverters, battery systems, sub-panels, electric car chargers, home devices, etc.). You will ensure that installer enablement and processes scale gracefully as we expand.

 

The Installer journey will involve close collaboration with Hardware Product and Operations.

 

Competencies we are looking for

  • Understand technically. You are not afraid to become intricately familiar with our cloud/ mobile/firmware/communications stack and hardware components. You are deeply curious about our architecture, data models, business rules and external integrations.
  • Think critically. You can develop and defend your point of view in the face of ambiguity and imperfect information. You can influence without authority. 
  • Inquire expertly. You ask high quality questions to uncover the problem-to-solve. You can separate the stated wants from the inferred needs. You think from the point of view of the humans we’re trying to solve problems for.
  • Communicate effectively. You can do a killer demo. You can explain a product idea and its value proposition in a manner that resonates with your audience. Your vocabulary adapts to the stakeholders you engage with - product, design, engineering, executive team, legal, operations, sales, finance and everyone in between.
  • Work collaboratively. You like working with people. People like working with you. You like being the connective tissue between teams. You don’t think of project management as a chore but necessary for product success.
  • Serve gladly. You are eager to become the go-to person. You are an active listener. You like fielding questions, resolving issues and generally being in service to others.

Experience we are looking for:

 

  • 7+ years of experience managing consumer or enterprise software products
  • Demonstrable record of shipping consumer-grade mobile apps that delivered business value and customer satisfaction
  • Deep appreciation for human-centered design
  • Experience with hardware products a plus
  • Experience in distributed energy, smart grid, IoT or IIoT a plus
  • Experience working with trade businesses a plus
