Fat is good. "Vegetable" oils are bad. Bad for us. Bad for the planet.

Our mission is simple: to eradicate the use of toxic vegetable oils in our food system. 

These destructive oils are hidden in everything, from salad dressings and condiments, to fast food and Michelin-starred restaurants, accounting for 20% of our daily calories. 

Vegetable oils have been linked to weight gain, diabetes, cancer, cognitive decline, heart disease, autoimmune disease, and more. They increase risk of death by 62% — more than heavy drinking or moderate smoking — and are a leading cause of deforestation and climate change. 

Zero Acre Farms is replacing the most problematic part of our food system with oils and fats that don't make us sick or destroy the planet. 

And we’re doing it by introducing a new category of healthy oils and fats, made by fermentation, not deforestation. 

Fermentation is the original culinary art, after fire. We use this ancient technique in a revolutionary way to produce oils and fats with the lowest levels of bad fats linked to inflammation and disease, while having a small environmental footprint.

Why We Exist

We believe a healthier world is possible with better oils and fats.

Vegetable oils account for 20% of our daily calories and have been linked to chronic disease, inflammation, obesity, and cognitive decline, as well as deforestation, biodiversity loss, and climate change, with no end in sight.

Vegetable oils are now the most consumed food in the world behind rice and wheat and are the fastest growing sub sector of global agriculture. More vegetable oil is consumed globally than all beef, chicken, cheese, and shrimp, combined.

The world needs an oil change.

Zero Acre Farms is on a mission to replace destructive vegetable oils in the food system with healthier, more sustainable oils and fats made by fermentation. Our first product, Cultured Oil, just launched DTC as we look ahead to retail, foodservice, and food manufacturing expansion.

The Role

The Director of Brand Marketing will “bring the brand to life” and be the key driver in building meaning and preference for Zero Acre whether it shows up on a restaurant menu or a pantry snack. Through consumer engagement and the commercial success of our partners, this role will architect a brand plan that develops strong relationships and marketing programs across B2B/B2C. You will transform a category, create a household brand, and inspire a new wave of label reading.

This role is fundamental to the business, as we are an innovator and disruptor within this industry. We are looking for someone who knows how to cut through the noise and focus on storytelling that works. You understand how to work with senior leadership to ideate, concept, and wireframe activations that go beyond driving “awareness” but rather driving brand recall. We believe that marketing is no longer a one-size-fits-all approach for our channels. You should understand how to think of the big idea/picture and how to adapt that big picture to different channels.

Responsibilities

You’ll have broad ownership of all owned and earned channels–setting strategy, creative direction, and enabling execution to build a compelling presence in the market that supports all business channels (restaurants, CPG, DTC). You’re eager to build a big, bold, unforgettable brand and know how to pull it together with the right resources and team in a 0 to 1 growth stage:

  • Content + Channels: 
    • Owned channel strategy and management including social, CRM, site, blog, and CX – you will bring vision and cohesion to every brand touchpoint in every channel, from a customer service interaction to an instagram post
  • Partnerships: 
    • Strategy and opportunity for people and brand partnerships to activate storytelling and growth across restaurant / CPG partners and DTC
    • Includes affiliate, brand collaborations, chef ambassadors, and events
  • Campaigns + Creative: 
    • Driving the brand calendar and campaign development, working closely with head of foodservice (restaurant) marketing on key accounts
    • Creative evolution, including art direction, tone & voice, and design
    • Creative direction for all partnership launches with restaurants and CPG brands
  • Comms: 
    • Brand messaging, stakeholder strategy and founder communications 
    • You will work cross-functionally to develop product messaging and claims that unlock appeal and sales velocity
  • PR: 
    • Media strategy, education, and engagement that drives a compelling narrative in market for our product innovation, restaurant partner success, and consumer/industry/category trends
    • You naturally build relationships and community, finding ways to connect our brand values and ethos with other entities

You and Your Experience

  • A mission-driven, passionate, and curious human who has a strong interest in food, health & wellness, and/or sustainability.
  • An experienced leader who has played a key role in scaling a brand through stages of growth. 
  • Direct, deep experience working on different levers of brand marketing, including content marketing, partnerships, communications/PR, and creative. 
  • Able to balance the creative art and analytical science of brand marketing—you see the connection between brand marketing and company growth. 
  • You love collaborating and working cross-functionally— you are comfortable in the details when you need to be and can zoom out for big picture clarity
  • Experience managing brand budget, allocations, and reporting

The following represents the expected compensation range for this role: The estimated pay range is $160,000 - $215,000 and will be based on a combination of the candidate's experience and location. Additionally, this role is eligible to participate in Zero Acre Farms benefits and equity programs.

A Note From Our Founders

The majority of Americans are sick. Let that sink in. More people have a chronic disease than not in this country! 6 out of 10. And a hundred years ago, almost no one had a chronic disease. Our healthy life expectancy is decreasing for the first time in recorded history. Our solution so far has been more prescription drugs (in 2018, the average American filled eighteen prescriptions).

Our planet is also being destroyed by the day. The Amazon loses about 2 football fields of rainforest every minute, mostly to grow industrial monocrops like seed oils that make us sick. Species extinction is at an all time high. Some projections say we only have 60 harvests left before our soil doesn't support any more life.

The real issue? These problems are interconnected. We're destroying the planet to grow food that makes us sick.

How is this not one of the most important, urgent, and talked about issues of our generation? We want to change that. We want to slow down and ideally reverse the skyrocketing rates of chronic disease and environmental impact caused by what we eat. We truly believe that we can save millions of lives, as well as millions of acres of rainforest, if we are successful in our mission of replacing destructive vegetable oils in our food supply.
