Position Title: Director, Engineering - Advanced Energy Storage Development
Reports To: Vice President, Advanced Energy Storage Development
Location: Westlake Village, CA or REMOTE (USA)

About the role
We’re seeking a hands-on individual to lead the technical efforts to bring advanced energy storage technologies and products into its solution set. You will play a pivotal role in addressing the industry's key unmet need of low-cost, high-reliability platforms that can perform the core storage function underpinning long-duration energy storage projects. You will use their experience and expertise in grid-scale energy storage projects to assess promising technologies and nascent products based on technical soundness, robustness, intrinsic hazards, supply chain requirements, and overall techno-economic potential. You will be instrumental in selecting promising candidates and developing them for assimilation into Energy Vault's commercial solution portfolio.

What you will do

  • Direct engineering efforts to develop new energy storage products optimized technically andcommercially for deployment in long-duration projects.
  • Support company's Advanced Energy Storage (AES) roadmap and guide planning across development, demonstration, and deployment phases.
  • Support identification and assessment of nascent Energy Storage products for incorporation into company's solution portfolio.
  • Develop technical criteria and lead technical assessment of internal and external Energy Storage technologies into company's AES stage-gate process. Support development and assessment of commercial criteria. Support overall effort by maintaining relationships with universities, national laboratories, and other entities in the field.
  • Lead design and implementation of advancing AES candidate technologies from TRL 5 through 8 within company's AES stage-gate process. Develop technical criteria for filtering funnel/down selecting at each stage gate.
  • Support efforts to obtain partner, grant and other funding sources for both development and demonstration.
  • Work with company's supply chain and manufacturing teams to evaluate and advance AES candidate technologies from MRL 5 through 8.
  • Work with product management team to ensure adherence to relevant codes and standards as well as obtain required product certifications. Lead AESD department's role in development of required product documentation (design guides, installation manuals, O&M manuals, etc.) and other elements necessary to transfer candidates into company’s commercial solution portfolio.
  • Work with internal teams to track product specifications, project optimization, and performance of commercially offered lithium-ion & gravity solutions.
  • Provide occasional consulting and technical support to Energy Vault's commercial projects to stay abreast of state-of-the-art and ensure company's performance.

  • What a qualified candidate should possess

  • Master of Science degree or equivalent in Engineering, Physics, or related.
  • 5+ years’ experience designing and engineering of grid-scale energy storage projects.
  • 3+ years’ leading engineering team on grid-scale energy storage project execution.
  • Understanding of electrochemical, mechanical, thermal, and chemical energy storage technologies. Expertise in fuel cell and/or hydrogen technology and products is desired but not required.
  • Technical understanding of non-storage core equipment and elements essential to a project (enclosures, PCS, transformers, switchgear, collection arrays, construction, EMS, SCADA, operations, maintenance, etc.).
  • Understanding of codes, standards, and certification requirements for energy storage products.
  • Comfort in fast-paced, rapid growth environments.
  • Experience in public companies is a plus.
