The Powertrain Engineering team at Zoox is responsible for designing, developing, and producing an electric powertrain specifically tailored for our autonomous mobility service. Our team has an action-biased culture marked by integrity, humility, competence, and passion for the Zoox mission and the systems we design. As a Firmware Controls Engineer focused on Charging Systems, you will work on architecting, prototyping, code, and bringing up the charging system controls from concept through to production. This involves working closely with the system engineers, HW design engineers, and Mechanical engineers to define control state machines, flow charts, signal flows, and timing diagrams and turn them into high assurance embedded firmware that is deployable on production vehicles and charging systems.

Responsibilities

  • You will write new control board low-level drivers and support to bring up the board. 
  • Write high assurance embedded charge control code per Zoox standards for our SAE J1772 charge controller to support DC fast charging.
  • Write embedded code to diagnose and test charging systems and subsystems.
  • Support troubleshooting charging FW issues using CAN tools, logic analyzers, etc. 
  • Support system integration, DFMEA, fault tree analysis and come up with fault diagnostics, fault handling, etc. for the charging system FW.
  • Support FW validation and automation teams on validating your charging code and overall system. 
  • Evaluate charging systems compute requirements and support selecting the suitable microcontroller, influence board design, I/O needs, etc.
  • Evaluate external supplier control boards.
  • Qualifications

  • 5+ years of automotive systems engineering experience.
  • BS or MS in computer science, electrical engineering, or related relevant field.
  • Deep technical and working knowledge of various microcontrollers families and experience in writing production embedded C, C++ code for a product design from concept to production and solving field issues.
  • Should have worked on charging systems and SAE J1772 PLC charge controls.
  • Experience with C or C++ programming for embedded Linux or micro-controllers.
  • Experience in unit testing, integration testing, regression testing, and HIL testing.
  • Experience with low-level interfaces such as I2C, SPI, CAN, RS232, Ethernet.
  • Experience with real-time operating systems (POSIX, QNX, FreeRTOS).

  • Bonus Qualifications

  • Familiarity with industry charging standards such as SAE J1772, IEC 61851, CHAdeMO.
  • Experience using simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, Python.
  • Experience in unit testing, integration testing, regression testing, and HIL testing.
  • Experience using measurement equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers to debug code.
  • Experience with power electronics systems FW development and digital signal processing.
  • Experience working with FPGAs.
