CFS is designing SPARC, a tokamak able to achieve net energy plasmas. SPARC includes HTS and copper magnets, thermal shields, vessels and plasma facing components, all subject to large operational loads (thermal, electromagnetic, etc) and competing for space. As the CAD Team Leader for the SPARC, you will manage the designers, create and maintain the CAD standards and be responsible for the design databases.

This team member will:

  • Plan, organize and manage the work of the SPARC CAD team
  • Provide guidance and direction to the CAD team to ensure operational and technical excellence
  • Hire and develop CAD designers for SPARC
  • Work with the other SPARC engineering team leaders to resolve technical issues 
  • Manage the SPARC design database
  • Ensure that released drawings and models are correct and of high quality
  • Develop, implement and monitor CAD design standards and procedures aligned with the SPARC needs
  • Recommend best practices for solutions to meet the SPARC needs
  • Supervisory responsibilities will include 6-8 full time staff, in addition to 10-20 contractors
  • The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering (or similar engineering discipline)
  • 10+ years of design experience in a product development environment and very strong 3D design skills
  • Design for production and installation of tightly tolerance large structural components
  • Experience with complex dynamic assemblies
  • 3+ years of supervisory experience with at least 10 individuals
  • Experience designing for environments with extreme thermal variations
  • Ability to develop and manage design procedures
  • Experience with NX within the last 5 years
  • Ability to clearly express and critique ideas
  • Attention to detail 
  • Emphasis on elegance and simplicity over complexity
  • Understanding manufacturing methods and their impact on designs
  • Drive towards commercially viable solutions
  • Values that align with our company’s values of integrity, execution, impact, and self-critique
  • Additional preferred experience and/or qualifications:

  • Teamcenter power user
  • In depth GDT experience
  • Experience designing for ultra high vacuum environments 
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally
  • Ability to perform activities such as typing, standing, sitting, etc. for extended periods of time
  • Willingness to travel occasionally and/or work extended hours as necessary
