Job Summary

MycoWorks is seeking a Biochemist to work within the Process Development Mycology group onsite at MWSC to act as the tactical and technical bridge between biological manipulations and effect on product quality. The Biochemist will work to quantify the effects of manipulations on our biomaterials in-process and post-process. The biochemist will be expected to perform method development, and help run experiments to test new growth control and metabolism techniques. The ideal candidate will have biochemistry and microbiology experience and the ability to lead experiments studying fungal growth and exudation. Secondary metabolite analysis is a plus. The ability to observe, document, and communicate as well as the ability to synthesize actions from results is highly desired. Familiarity with mycology and fungal fermentation or a related field is also desirable. The candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate and learn from people with a variety of expertise within the team and also cross-functionally.

Responsibilities:

  • Apply insights from prior fungal research to drive advancements, with a primary focus on fostering and optimizing fungal growth and development strategies.
  • Utilize in-depth expertise in microbiological techniques, including aseptic technique, DNA extraction and analysis, preparation of growth media, maintenance of cell cultures, and proficiently manage the growth of fungi and stock generation.
  • Lead method development, design and execute experiments for testing new growth control and metabolism techniques.
  • Track, organize, and analyze experimental data, and share results and insights with the research team through scientific presentations.
  • Conduct experiments to assess fungal physiology, phenotypes, biomass, and mycelial growth kinetics in both small and medium-scale platforms.
  • Collaborate with Process Development, Engineering, Quality, Product, and Operations to establish and monitor target growth environments, providing routine updates to the team.
  • Author and maintain meticulous records of experimental protocols and methods.
  • Contribute to the establishment and maintenance of the research laboratory.
  • Assist in transferring technology from lab to production scale.
  • Maintain safe practices and working environment.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with Google Workspace products and Microsoft Excel.
  • Use prior experience with R programming if applicable.

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in biochemistry, biology or related field, or comparable combination of experience and training.
  • Knowledge of aseptic techniques; experience working in a laminar flow hood and/or Biosafety Cabinet required.
  • Previous experience with analytical chemical method development and assays.
  • Ability to perform complex procedures reproducibly.
  • Ability to work independently after training in research procedures.
  • Ability to organize and perform parallel experiments.
  • Ability to analyze experiments and think critically about results.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and manage a research team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques and biochemical analysis techniques is a plus.
  • Experience working with microbiology, biotechnology, and industrial fungal material growth is a plus.
