More about the team you will be joining as a Battery Build Engineer

We are currently entering a phase of expansion with the objective of rapidly bringing competitive product(s) to market. As part of this expansion, we are looking for engineers to join the Battery team at Vertical Aerospace. You will be required to assist in all aspects of work at our new battery development centre which is being established to test and build prototype batteries.  A real “can do attitude” is required and the candidate must be happy working with minimal guidance and supervision, the role will be varied and challenging at times.  

 What success will look like for the Battery Build Engineer

Duties will be wide ranging and varied and will include: 

  • Play a key role in the establishment of battery manufacturing within Vertical Aerospace
  • Support the establishment of manufacturing plans, standard operating procedures, safe systems of work and risk assessments
  • Support the production of build process documents, including but not limited to Bills of Sequence, Bills of Process, Process Failure Mode & Effects Analysis (PFMEA)
  • Carrying out the hands-on build of high voltage (HV) prototype battery packs, including battery modules, bus-bars and electronic components.
  • Supporting the set-up and programming of automated systems and equipment
  • Enable a safe working environment for all personnel, including the production of processes and controls
  • Support post-build analysis, lessons learned, report writing and continuous improvement actions including 8D problem solving and defect resolution
  • Establishing and running Design of Experiment (DoE) trials to establish and demonstrate the capability of various manufacturing processes.
  • Support with the creation and maintenance of project plans, scheduling and prioritisation of tasks in line with the wider programme, including coordination and alignment between teams.
  • Track progress of activities and materials to deliver key work packages within the required time, cost and quality.
  • Identify key risks and opportunities in the project delivery and escalate where appropriate.
  • Coordinate and track activities with external organisations and suppliers ensuring requirements, schedules, and roles and responsibilities are met and well understood.
  • Working cross-functionally within the Battery team, supporting other activities as required 

Everything sounds very interesting but how do I know this is the role for me?

We are looking for people that will have the following qualifications and experiences:

  • A degree in an engineering or technical discipline, or equivalent experience 
  • A working knowledge of HV lithium-ion battery systems 
  • The ability to identify and resolve complex technical issues 
  • Have an automotive, industrial or aerospace background. 
  • Should have very good attention to detail and can operate to challenging deadlines without compromising standards or quality.
  • Have a good working knowledge of schematics, technical assembly drawings and CAD
  • Experience within a manufacturing environment is desirable
  • Experience in the use of automated machinery and control systems, including set-up and programming is desirable
  • Happy to travel between Avonmouth, Bristol and other VA locations and stay away for short periods if required
  • Trained to deal with high-voltage components, including Authorised Person (AP) and Senior Authorised Person (SAP) training

Our Ways of Working In the UK we have two offices and a Battery facility in Bristol, an office in London and a site in Kemble with well stocked free kitchen provisions including hot drinks, fruit and breakfasts every weekday. Our typical full time working week is 37.5 hours. We recognise the world of work is rapidly evolving and that 9-5 is no longer a fitting pattern for many.
