About the company:

Revolutionising urban air mobility and electrifying air travel

Why work with us?

We at Vertical Aerospace are pushing the boundaries of what is possible, creating technology to achieve sustainable air travel like never before. Vertical comprises a world-class team of leaders, experts, engineers who're all striving towards the same goal, to make air travel personal, on-demand, and carbon free. This is your chance to be a part of this extraordinary team.

Vertical is one the world’s leading eVTOL businesses, and a pioneer of this ground-breaking new segment, which marks the beginning of sustainable aviation.

Founded in 2016, Vertical uniquely combines the best of the aerospace, Formula 1 and automotive industries and has become one of only seven companies globally to have successfully flown multiple full-scale eVTOL prototypes.  The VX4, is a world-leading fully composite tilt-rotor winged eVTOL that will carry one pilot and four passengers or cargo.  VX4 is in plan to be  certified in late 2024, placing the business in the top two companies globally with a commercially viable aircraft capable of spanning intra and intercity passenger and cargo eVTOL markets.

We are looking for an Advanced CFD Engineer who will:

We are looking for someone that will enjoy working with a world class team comprised of leading aerospace and technology thinkers as well as some of the finest engineering talent. Of course, you will possess or be able to rapidly adopt a passion for sustainable aviation and it’s benefits for both society and sustainability.

Vertical is a values-led business that embraces diversity in all its forms in particular diversity of thought. Vertical is committed to building an industry leading team offering global perspectives that represent the communities it serves.

The responsibilities and duties of the Advanced CFD Engineer will be as follows:

This role will serve as a focal point for external (and internal) CFD simulation and, should the candidate have some CAD skills, ideally some part design as well (but not necessarily required)]. In this role you will do:

  • Analysing CFD results, and comparing them to experimental (wind tunnel and more general component testing) as well as flight test data
  • Accessing and manipulating CFD models
  • Prompt resolution of CFD issues (including recording, and tracking)
  • Request, define, and / or demonstrate the benefits of new software or changes to existing packages which will streamline CFD workflows
  • Project scoping, execution, and reviewing
  • Continuous and balanced improvement between CFD throughput vs. quality
  • Develop new CFD methodology tools
  • Assist in the maintenance of a CFD Wiki knowledge base, including support documents, best practices, and training material as required
  • Validation and release of CFD solver and post-processor scripts
  • Detailed analysis and reporting of results
  • Provide mentoring and support to more junior CFD engineers and aerodynamicists
  • Propose design solutions for non-aerodynamic CFD projects (e.g. aero-acoustics, thermodynamics, etc.)

The successful Advanced CFD Engineer will have the following Experiences & Qualifications:

We seek a unique individual, who has the confidence to work independently and develop solutions to CFD issues which are outside of the norm. A career background in eVTOL or general aviation CFD and aerodynamics would be particularly advantageous, together with an interest in green technology and/or aviation. You will need:

  • A blend of iQ and eQ, the ability to solve new problems in a fast-paced start-up environment.
  • A passion for building something new.
  • A demonstrable track record of knowledge of tools and methods within the CFD field.
  • Experience in using the following software / coding language is preferable: ANSYS Fluent / CFX, Matlab, Python, CATIA / 3DeX, SolidWorks
  • The ability to deliver exceptional CFD results accurately detailing complicated flow conditions and interactions for various components of an eVTOL aircraft (i.e. rotors, wings, interaction effects, etc.).
  • A core strength in the creation and application of CFD tools and methodologies.
  • The technical skills to document and present clear conclusions from large and complex datasets.
  • The gravitas and leadership capability to offer opinion as part of the Aerodynamics team, serving as a true partner to colleagues across the business.
  • Professional qualification in a relevant engineering field would be an advantage.
