About Vertical

We are breaking the boundaries and pushing our commitment to the EVTOL world by changing the way the world travels. Our mission is powered by pioneers and progress is our prerogative.

Here at Vertical, we are developing the UK’s first fully electric, vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOL), the VX4. With zero-operating emissions. Vertical is transforming the way people travel by offering a faster, safer, and greener way to move.

The electrochemistry team is responsible for delivering and verifying the cell for our aircraft programme. This role will support the electrochemistry team to qualify the cell for our prototypes and VX4 aircraft.

What success will look like for the Advanced Cell Engineer:

  • Developing methods for commercial lithium ion cell performance qualification, covering fundamental electrochemistry, test design and analysis
  • Writing test plans, working with test engineers and technicians to communicate test requirements, analysing and reporting results
  • Working closely with other members of the electrochemistry team and modelling team to optimise cell models through test design and analysis
  • Development and optimisation of data analysis tools for electrical test data, including performance and lifetime data
  • Working with industrial and academic partners on test and analysis activities
  • Management of cell requirements for cell performance and other related attributes
  • Working with test and facility teams to carry out cell level abuse and safety tests
  • Other related tasks within the electrochemistry team, spanning performance, lifetime and abuse verification and future cell technology evaluation.

Everything sounds very interesting but how do I know this is the role for me?

  • Academic qualification(s) or equivalent (e.g. BSc, MSc, PhD)
  • Strong electrochemistry base and understanding of lithium ion cell function, including performance/design trade offs for different applications
  • 1-2 years working with commercial lithium-ion cells
  • Experience working with lithium ion cell performance data i.e. rate tests, HPPC, GITT, thermal characterisation, high precision coulometry
  • Experience in lithium ion cell test design
  • Experience in cell level abuse (thermal runaway, short circuit, vibration etc) testing
  • Experience working cross functionally to deliver projects/pieces of work efficiently, professionally and in a timely manner
  • Experience working in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment where communication and adaptability is key
  • Ability to learn new concepts and methods and execute them independently
  • Problem solving skills and a can-do attitude
  • Experience in requirements management and/or systems engineering is advantageous
  • Familiarity with lithium-ion cell ECMs (equivalent circuit models) is advantageous
  • Experience of qualifying the cell in a system for an industrial application e.g. EV is advantageous
  • Hands on experience with electrical cell testing, materials testing or cell forensic analysis is advantageous
