About the company:

Revolutionising urban air mobility and electrifying air travel

Our Mission

At Vertical Aerospace, we are pioneering the way for electric aviation. The VX4, our eVTOL (electric, vertical, take-off and landing), 'zero emissions' aircraft will set a new safety standard for how we will navigate the sky.

We won't realise our mission following the same legacy processes and traditions our predecessors followed, instead, we want to 'redefine' aerospace best practices.

We are growing quickly from a prototype business to a scaling SME, and the next few years will be critical to our success and delivering on our ambitious goals of having the VX4 in service by 2030.

What to expect

As an Advanced BMS Systems Engineer, you will join a world class team comprised of leading aerospace and technology thinkers as well as some of the finest engineering talent. You will enjoy working with a team that brings together diverse perspectives and embraces diversity of thought. Of course, you will possess or be able to rapidly adopt a passion for sustainable aviation and its benefits for both society and sustainability.

A typical day could range from leading systems engineering development for in-house BMS/HW projects to coordinating with external development suppliers, performing hands-on testing and debugging, and integrating the BMS with the HV Electrical System.

The ability to quickly figure things out and make decisions at pace as well as collaborate across teams will all factor into this role's impact and your success.

What you'll do

  • You will lead the systems engineering development for in-house BMS/HW projects.

  • You will lead BMS requirements capture, validation, and verification activities.

  • You will interface with other aircraft systems and integrate the BMS with the HV Electrical System.

  • You will perform hands-on testing and de-bugging of systems.

  • You will coordinate external development suppliers/contractors when required.

  • You will integrate and validate systems into the aircraft, supporting colleagues as needed.

  • You will perform design reviews for BMS development, including DFMEA, FTA, FMECA etc.

  • You will identify and track specific assignments and deliverables, and provide assessment on the progress and outcome of work on a day-to-day basis.

What you'll bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Applied Physics, Electrical, Electronics, Aerospace, Systems, or Computer Engineering or related engineering field is preferable.

  • Extensive proven experience in Hardware development for aerospace or automotive.

  • Experience with Battery Management Systems.

  • Experience in Systems Engineering.

  • High Voltage training and advanced battery design/development experience is desirable.

  • Experience with FMEA, DFMEA, FTA and single component failure analysis.

  • Good understanding of network protocols like: CAN, Ethernet, SPI, I2C, ARINC.

  • Experience with requirements management.

  • Experience with functional safety, aircraft or automotive standards:

    • DO-178, DO-254, ARP 4754, ARP 4761 and DO-160

    • ISO 26262

    • IEC 61508 and/or derived requirements
