About the company:
Our Mission
At Vertical Aerospace, we are pioneering the way for electric aviation. The VX4, our eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing), ‘zero emissions’ aircraft will set a new safety standard for how we navigate the sky.
We won’t realise our mission by following the same legacy processes and traditions our predecessors did; instead, we aim to redefine aerospace best practices.
As we grow from a prototype business into a scaling enterprise, the next few years will be critical to delivering our ambitious goal of having the VX4 in service by 2030.
What to Expect
We're looking for an enthusiastic and committed Systems Engineer to join our growing Battery Systems team on a maternity cover contract.
You’ll play a central role in connecting functional leads across the organisation to deliver a cohesive, certified, and high-performing battery system; one of the most critical components of our aircraft.
As a Systems Engineer, you will own the architecture and integration of the battery system’s functional design, covering requirements, development, certification, and entry into service. You’ll work closely with mechanical, electrical, BMS, and electrochemical teams to ensure the system meets its performance requirements, and you’ll collaborate with internal and external certification leads to define a safe, reliable, and well-defined design ready for flight.
This position would suit someone with a solid understanding of battery technology and aircraft systems, who is motivated by technical challenge, passionate about sustainability, and excited to contribute to the future of electric flight.
What You’ll Do
Generate, review, approve, validate, and verify battery system requirements.
Act as the system-level performance expert, coordinating between battery functional leads and engineering teams.
Conduct and facilitate multi-disciplinary design reviews on battery performance.
Develop and review:
System performance and thermal requirements for range, electrical, and thermal behaviour.
System and equipment test plans, reports, and compliance documentation.
System engineering processes and validation frameworks.
Identify optimisation opportunities for battery performance against flight and operational requirements.
Ensure system and aircraft-level requirements are achieved.
Coordinate with the Programme Manager on timing, cost, and design principles.
What You’ll Bring
Experience with battery systems and cross-functional engineering delivery.
Ability to manage complex system trades and develop sub-system requirements.
Excellent problem-solving, communication, and technical writing skills.
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field.
Skilled in interpreting and reviewing technical schematics, functional diagrams, and engineering specifications.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and systems engineering tools.
Fluent in English (written and spoken).
Desired:
Experience with Simulink or equivalent modelling tools.
Knowledge of lithium-ion battery technology and supporting systems.
Familiarity with ARP 4765 and MBSE methodologies.
Experience in validation processes and performing requirements correctness checks.
Previous experience managing complex engineering programmes and delivering design reviews.
Hands-on experience in testing, instrumentation, data acquisition, and analysis.
Involvement with industry working groups or the development of consensus standards.
5+ years of relevant experience.
