We are looking for an Actuation Systems Engineer who will:

Be joining our Fluid and Mechanical Systems team at Vertical Aerospace, as we are currently entering a phase of rapid expansion with the objective of rapidly bringing competitive product(s) to market. The ideal candidate will bring strong ‘hands-on’ engineering skills backed by a solid theoretical understanding and resolute attention to detail to the role. Previous aerospace experience is ideal, although not essential. A strong background in developing or integrating complex equipment into aircraft is desirable.

You will need be prepared to take on a wide range of challenges and responsibilities across multiple streams of work in a fast-moving environment, with the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of developing the actuation systems across out aircraft programmes and test asset portfolio.

The responsibilities and duties of the Actuation Systems Engineer will be as follows:

  • Running of system trade studies to ensure an optimised solution
  • Using a systems engineering approach to deliver equipment verification
  • Generate, review and manage system requirements
  • Define testing and verification activities to be carried out internally and by external suppliers
  • Conduct multi-disciplinary design reviews throughout the different phases of aircraft development
  • Support the creation and peer review of:
    • System safety analyses, such as FHAs, FTAs, CCAs, etc.
    • Engineering drawings, schematics, and design specifications
    • System and equipment test plans and reports
    • Compliance documentation
    • System engineering processes
  • Manage external suppliers/partners to deliver on time, cost and quality

The successful Actuation Systems Engineer will have the following Experiences & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in aerospace engineering or a similar discipline.
  • Previous aircraft experience is ideal, particularly actuation or control systems development.
  • Experience of the product development life cycle, from concept through to manufacturing is desirable.
  • Understanding of systems engineering principles, working with requirements and application of the V&V process.
  • A track record of cross disciplinary working, bring people and teams together for a common goal.
  • Good practical mindset, ideally backed up with hands-on experience of building, commissioning and testing mechanical systems in a bench, lab or production environment.
  • Experience with requirements management toolsets is highly advantageous
  • Strong organisational skills and an ability to focus on and complete detailed tasks in a busy, fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to interface with a wide range of disciplines within engineering.
