Everyone on the Square Roots team—from farmers to engineers, commercial experts to operations specialists—is supported, connected, and empowered to do their best work to help Square Roots achieve its goals as a company.

About the Role

We are looking for a Staff Accountant to join our Finance and Accounting team. This role is critical in ensuring that our daily accounting operations run smoothly and that the business can grow as efficiently as possible. You will support each department by processing vendor invoices and credit applications in a timely manner.  You will also serve as a main point of contact for our customers, while working closely with campus General Managers, in the monitoring of Accounts Receivables. Additionally, you will support the Senior Accountant in various month-end close activities including but not limited to bank reconciliations, credit card expense coding and reconciliation, and posting journal entries. This role would be great for someone that has 1-2 years of accounting experience and is looking to join a high growth start-up company.

You will be reporting to our Senior Accountant, while assisting the VP of Finance as needed.

You should have an understanding of GAAP and internal controls. And certainly, a demonstrated interest in the food and/or agriculture industries is important.

You will:

  • Share ownership of the Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions for all campus locations. This includes, but is not limited to, processing vendor invoices, credit applications, and customer payments.
  • Be a point of contact for vendors and customers.
  • Code and reconcile credit card transactions.
  • Assist Senior Accountant with monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports in accordance with GAAP.
  • Maintain Fixed Asset schedules on a regular basis to inform decisions and key stakeholders.
  • Provide additional ad hoc reports and analyses as needed.

You have experience with:

  • Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), AP, AR, and bank reconciliations.
  • Bachelor's degree; 1-2+ years experience in an Accounting role preferred, but not required.
  • Implementing and improving internal controls.
  • Public Accounting experience preferred, but not required.
  • CPA License preferred, but not required.
  • Prior start up experience is a plus.

You are:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel/Google Sheets
  • Experienced with Quickbooks Online or other similar accounting systems.
  • Comfortable working in a distributed team and have strong communication skills to make that successful.
  • Able to prioritize tasks and pivot quickly as needed.
  • Able to efficiently and effectively communicate and interact with all levels of the organization.
  • Someone that has a passion for food systems and your community.
  • Comfortable working in a remote environment.
  • Detail-oriented and enjoy pulling together all pieces of information to get the big picture.
  • Cognizant of when to escalate concerns or raise your hand for help to your team.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced startup environment.

You'll love working at Square Roots because:

  • We're here to change the food system. You'll have the opportunity to play a significant role in our work at the intersection of technology, farming, and the global food industry - and we're only just getting started.
  • Our team is driven by a shared set of values. These keep us aligned and remind us how to show up every day in the face of growth and ambiguity. Whether you’re working remotely or on the farms,  collaboration, respect, optimism and humility are all embraced, and we seek to empower people at every step. Ask us about the rest!
  • Benefits and perks, of course. We're all here first and foremost to play our part in the mission, but medical, dental, and vision coverage, flexible work life culture, and lots of samples of the delicious food we grow certainly do not hurt.

COVID-19 Vaccine Policy:

New employees are required to be fully vaccinated prior to their start date. The definition of fully vaccinated includes a booster for those that are eligible.

You are considered fully vaccinated if:

  • You have received a full series of the vaccine recently (meaning 2 doses within 5 months for the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, or 1 dose within 2 months for Johnson and Johnson).
  • You received your full series over 5 months ago for Pfizer and Moderna or over 2 months ago for Johnson and Johnson, and have also received a booster shot.

Proof of vaccination is required during the hiring process, and employees will be required to get booster shots as they become eligible to maintain their fully-vaccinated status.

As federal guidance on booster shots evolves, the definition of ‘fully vaccinated’ may change.

In accordance with EEOC guidance, if you are not vaccinated or do not intend to be due to medical reasons or deeply held religious beliefs, you may make an accommodation request and Square Roots will make a reasonable effort to accommodate you, subject to the requirements of the role you are applying for.

Failure to be fully vaccinated by start date without a documented accommodation will result in offer rescindment or termination.
